English qualifications

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (ToEFL) is an English language test for all students whose native language is not English. It is a requirement for almost every American college and university. It is intended to determine whether applicants will be able to follow the teaching in English and actively participate. The ToEFL is a multiple-choice test lasting around four hours. It is made up of four sections: listening comprehension, writing comprehension, vocabulary and reading comprehension. In the last section, an essay must be written on a specified subject within 30 minutes. Active speaking ability is not tested. Further information on the ToEFL can be found on the website

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The IELTS is a language qualification jointly managed and developed by the British Council, the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) and the International Development Programme of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP). It is recognised by all universities in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, as well as many European universities offering international courses. In the USA, the IELTS is accepted as proof of language proficiency by many universities. The four-part test (listening, reading, writing and speaking) demonstrates both passive and active language proficiency. Further information about examination dates and preparatory material can be found on the IELTS homepage.
