Language qualification
Written confirmation of language skills gained. For most courses, international applicants must demonstrate proficiency in German. Institutions specify which levels are required for which courses or to apply for a pre-study German course or the preparatory course and what specific language qualifications they accept.

Language test
Test to demonstrate language proficiency.

Latinum
Qualification showing knowledge of Latin to a particular level (intermediate or higher Latinum). An intermediate or higher Latinum qualification is a requirement for some courses. At many institutions, you can take the Latinum qualification in the first semesters of study.

Leave of absence
With sufficient reason to do so, students may take a leave of absence of their study programme. A special application must be submitted in order to do this (except for during the first semester of the study programme). Acceptable reasons include illness, pregnancy or a period of study abroad. A semester of leave does not count as a study semester but does count as a semester in higher education. This means that your place is kept open without you having to hand in any assignments.

Lecture
Type of teaching: Series of oral presentations given by a professor on a particular topic. Lectures are not normally interrupted for questions.

Lecture time
Part of the semester when courses are held.

Lecture timetable
List of all courses offered by an institution in a semester. The lecture timetable is available from the institution and in certain bookshops. Many departments also issue annotated lecture timetables containing more detailed information about the courses available. Many institutions also publish the current lecture timetable on their homepage.

Lecturer
Individual teaching at an institution of higher education or other educational establishment for adults.

Legalisation
Confirmation of the authenticity of a signature or a foreign certificate by a German embassy or consulate.

Local immigration authorities
(Ger. "Auslaenderbehoerde") Office responsible for issuing residence permits, work permits and dealing with other legal matters relevant to foreign students and citizens.
