Legalisation/Apostille

  • Legalisation confirms the authenticity of a foreign certificate. You can obtain legalisation at a German embassy or consulate in the country from which the certificate originates. You normally require legalisation unless your country has an international treaty with Germany agreeing to waive the need for legalisation between the two countries.

  • The so-called "Hague Apostille" also confirms the authenticity of a foreign certificate. However, unlike legalisation the Apostille is carried out by an authority in the country from which the certificate originates. An apostille can only replace legalisation if a corresponding international treaty is in place.

  • Find out more on the  the Foreign Office website or under International certificate arrangements.

  • You will find detailed information in the consular information under International public certificates for use in Germany on the Foreign Office website.
