Teacher training college
Special type of higher education institution specifically for training teachers.

Technical college
Not to be confused with a university of applied sciences: Type of German secondary school with a vocational focus, which offers various courses leading to the university of applied sciences entrance qualification in one (with previous professional training) or two years (for secondary school graduates).

Technical school
Not to be confused with a university of applied sciences: School offering one- to three-year professional education courses, based on introductory professional training and subsequent work experience, leading to an advanced qualification in a particular profession.

Technical university
Institution with university status that specialises in natural science and engineering subjects.

TestDaF (German as a foreign language test)
Standardised language qualification accepted by all German higher education institutions. Tests are held five times a year at numerous TestDaF testing centres worldwide. The test is divided into reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression components. The components can be passed at different levels. Institutions specify which of these levels are required for admission. Different levels may be required depending on the subject.

Testing centre
Familiarises test participants with the content and format of the tests and carries out language tests.

Third country
Refers to any non-EU country.

Tiered courses
To shorten the studying time and to make German qualifications more comparable with international qualifications, many institutions have introduced tiered courses. The first professional qualification - the Bachelor's degree - is obtained after three to four years. A Bachelor's degree can be supplemented by a one to two-year Masters.

Traineeship
One to two-year practical component of certain state examination courses. The traineeship is normally completed between the first and second state examinations and forms part of teaching or law courses, for example.

Tutorial
Teaching course that is generally offered in conjunction with a lecture in which the material is dealt with actively in more depth: including space for discussion and queries.
