Weekly study hours (SWS)
For every course, a particular number of weekly study hours have to be completed each semester. For example, a course that takes place every week for a semester and lasts 45 minutes is listed as 1 SWS in the lecture timetable, while 90 minutes of teaching is 2 SWS.

Winter semester
In Germany, the academic year is divided into two semesters: the winter and summer semester. The winter semester normally begins in October (September in universities of applied sciences) and lasts for 6 months.

Work permit
Permit required by non-EU citizens seeking work in the Federal Republic of Germany, which must be applied for at the appropriate Auslaenderbehoerde. Foreign students without a work permit are generally allowed to work 90 full days or 180 half-days per calendar year.
